Beatrice Pere: Naikarra Programs Assistant

Awareness is changing in Olderkesi… I am very committed to creating opportunities for many of our girls here.

Beatrice was a highly effective Team Angaza intern for Nkoisuash Primary School in the Olderkesi region for most of 2024 before being hired for a new position as a much needed assistant to our Naikarra Region Supervisor, Christine Mpoe, in September. In her new role, she’ll be providing vital support to Christine, crisscrossing this remote region to support our partner schools and train and guide our Team Angaza interns and identify locations of high need. Beatrice has a university degree in Community Development. She got married last year and has one child. Of the region where she grew up and now works, Beatrice notes:

Olderkesi is an area that is trying to develop but they have only recently begun understanding the value of formal education,” notes Beatrice. “Many of our parents are not educated and are stretching alot to educate all their children. You’ll find that many of them educate their boy children over their girl children because they have the mentality that a girl child, once she gets married. won’t bring any support back to them compared to their boy children. FGM is still practiced but we’re trying our best to educate our parents [about the health risks], but it is really only us trying to solve that problem, along with church leaders. We only have a few female secondary school and university graduates to serve as local role models. But awareness is changing… I am very committed to creating opportunities for many of our girls here.”
