TWO-YEAR GRANT PROGRAM

One of our core programs opens new secondary day schools in partnership with primary schools by repurposing their extra classrooms or other nearby spaces. To help these new schools survive their vulnerable first years of operations until they receive Government support once they are fully built, we support them via a grant program that also helps create classrooms that are safe for, and supportive of, girls. We do this by funding 50% of these new schools’ teacher salaries during their financially vulnerable first year in exchange for their commitment to hire at least 50% female teachers and track students’ attendance regularly. We offer an additional, smaller grant to support these schools during their second year to bridge them through until they become fully built and can receive government support.

These female teachers are important. Currently, they are rare in Loita. But when they are present, they offer invaluable role models, mentoring and support to local girls in the classroom. They also offer tangible evidence to local parents of the professional opportunities available to girls when they receive secondary education and beyond.

Rebecah Ledidi was a teacher at Olmesutie Primary School prior to becoming our Schools Coordinator in 2021. In 2021, Olmesutie became the site of the second high school we opened in the Loita HIlls region and the first to pilot a R.A.C.H.E.L and be awarded a first year grant.
