We opened our 2nd day secondary school at Olmesutie Primary in 2021 in two existing classrooms and in 2023, are helping them complete their final two classrooms and the laboratory now required by the Kenyan government. We also piloting our first RACHEL here in 2021. Rachels - Remote Area Community Hotspots for Education and Learning – are portable, battery-powered devices that contain content from educational websites in offline format, allowing them to wirelessly deliver free digital educational content to nearby tablets, laptops, or smartphones where no internet infrastructure exists.
We also launched our First Year grant program at Olmesutie, which helps ensure that new secondary schools can stay viable during their vulnerable first year of operations. In exchange for a $4000 grant to cover 50% of teachers’ salaries in their first year, schools awarded this grant commit to hire at least 50% female teachers.
